New Themes and Learning in January
Math: We are beginning a new math unit on Measurement this month. This unit incorporates many parts of measurement. We will begin measuring temperature with thermometers. We will then move into measuring time with clocks. Students will be reviewing telling time by the hour and half hour on both analogue and digital clocks. They will be learning about telling time by the minute as well as elapsed time. Students will begin learning about "quarter past" and "quarter to" this year. Next month we will continue with measurement with rulers etc.
Reading: We are continuing to work on our comprehension skills this month. We will be learning about Folktales and Fables. Mrs. Shantz and I have been planning a special joint grade 2 project involving drama and tales later this term. We will keep you posted- it should be fun!
Students will be learning to read words with two vowels (oa, ai, ea etc.)
Writing: Students are learning write in paragraph form. We are continuing to learn about complete sentences and will be focusing on commas and apostrophes. We have a couple special writing/Art projects scheduled this month.
Social Studies: Our new unit is Mapping. Students will be learning to read maps, use a compass as well as a legend/key.
Science: We will continue with our 'Matter' unit with a specific focus on Water and Liquids. We will be doing a number of different experiments this month. Students will also be learning about the water cycle.
Health & Career: Our new unit is Health & Safety. Students will be learning about safety in our homes and Safety in our community. They will be required to know their personal information (i.e. address and phone number) and learn the hazardous symbols and what they mean. More info will be coming home soon about this important unit.
