Parkcrest Literacy Week Begins this Sunday!!!! Our class has joined the challenge!

Tonight  I am sending home information about literacy activities happening at Parkcrest and around Kamloops.  Exciting and Fun events are happening in our community.

This Monday:  Several classes have chosen to participate in the Unplug and Play challenge.  Can we rise to this challenge??? I know we can!  Students are asked to have less screen time (video games, TV etc) and spend more time reading.  They will track their time and then next Monday bring in their papers.

Literacy Week runs Jan 21-25.  Parkcrest will have activities happening each day.

Each Day:

We will hear Mr. Aziz read aloud a story each morning on the announcements

Classes will be writing a story.  Each day classes will pass their story onto another class for them to continue on. On Friday we will get to hear the whole story.

Kamloops Blazers are coming to visit each class on Monday

All week students can bring in a ‘gently used’ book or a couple of books to go into a book swap.  They will be given a coupon and then on Friday, students can go to the book swap and  choose a new book.

After lunch each day the whole school will take part in DEAR (drop everything and read)

Friday- is “Dress as your Favourite Storybook Character” day

Thanks for your support everyone. This sounds like a very exciting week! If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at alatta@sd73.bc.ca or contact me at the school.

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year!  We are now into the full swing of things in grade two.  This time of year is a heavy teaching time and we are working hard to plow through the grade two curriculum. I want to send you a letter about what we are learning in class so that you can support your child’s development at home.

Reading:  We are currently learning about Fairy Tales and are reading stories and plays about these classic tales.  Later in the unit I will introduce Fracture Fairy Tales.  The children always enjoy hearing the twist on their favourite stories.

Writing:   I am now expecting students to be writing between 8-10 sentences in a writing period.  Students this term will be working on their descriptive words and proper paragraph style.

Math:  We are currently learning learning to tell time with clocks.  Students are learning both digital and analogue time.  We have been reviewing hour and half hour and are now learning to feel confident telling time by 5 minute intervals.

Health and Career:     Our unit is called “Healthy Bodies/ Healthy Minds.”  We have just started talking about the food groups.  We will soon be discussing vitamins and ways to keep our bodies healthy.

Social Studies:   This term we are learning about mapping.  Last week we learned about the compass rose and this week we have been talking about Map Keys.  Students are very engaged and interested in this unit.

Science:  Our topic currently is States of Matter.  This is a fun unit.  Next week we will be breaking it down and talking about Solids, Liquids and Gas seperately.  Students always enjoy the exciting science experiments that go along with this unit.

Artist of the Month:    Our grade twos are learning a ton about Vincent Van Gogh.  They have made beautiful Starry Night portraits (currently in the hallway) and are now looking at Van Gogh’s “Bedroom Series” painting.  Ask your child what they have learned so far about Van Gogh- he is a very interesting artist!
