This week we continue our Rainforest studies all the while comparing it to the forest we will see on Friday at Isobel Lake. Students have been very engaged learning about the plants and creatures in the Rainforests. We have been learning about the difference between tropical rainforests and temperate forests. Yesterday our lessons were on pollination and why the butterflies are so crucial to our ecosystem. The students have been studying butterflies during our library research time. Today we painted water colour butterflies.
In Math we have begun Fractions and understanding it to means "a part of the whole." Yesterday we pretended we were lost in the rainforest and we only had one portion of food left. (this was a little jelly fruit I had given them) They had to cut it into halves and then quarters and eighths. They enjoyed this activity immensely!
In Language Arts we have been reading Rainforest stories, rainforest research, rainforest poems and even rainforest songs. In writing, we started a descriptive writing activity on a smelly locker that has a magical door that leads us to the rainforest. Students did a wonderful job on Tuesday writing great descriptions of the smells and things that were in the locker.
Gardengate: I am still needing many permission slips for this field trip. I noticed many were still in students agendas today. Please sign and return them as soon as possible.
Letter Envelopes: I do have quite a few envelopes returned and addressed. Thank-you to those of you that included postage on it. This saves me having to get stamps! I appreciate your help with this. The students have been very excited to write to family and friends. We are hoping many will write back! I am planning to take the kids to the mailboxes to mail their letters next week. I do have quite a few school release forms that Mr. Poelzer had sent home earlier in the year that allow us to leave the school grounds for short periods. I am however missing some so I will be sending home permission slips with those students that are missing these.
Isobel Lake: Important Newsletter will be coming home Wednesday regarding Isobel Lake and what your child will need to bring on Friday for this trip. Please take a moment to read through this and help your child prepare for this day.
